FA Cup: 10-man Middlesbrough thrash Sheffield Wednesday

Middlesbrough have cruised into the FA Cup fourth round with a 3-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday, despite playing more than 30 minutes a man down.

Defender Daniel Ayala was sent off seconds after Grant Leadbitter’s opener for when he blocked off Fernando Forestieri.

Captain Leadbitter had put Boro ahead after the break when he curled a free-kick into the corner.

And Middlesbrough doubled their lead within 10 minutes of going a man down when Alvaro Negredo charged down goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith’s poor clearance into the empty Owls net.

Marten de Roon added a late third when he smashed in from the edge of the penalty area.

Middlesbrough were the second Premier League team to win on Sunday after going a man down, as Chelsea thrashed Peterborough United 4-1.

Meanwhile, Ryan Sessegnon became the youngest goal-scorer in the full FA Cup — not including preliminary rounds — after scoring aged 16 years and 235 days in Fulham’s 2-1 win at Cardiff City and Liverpool were held to 0-0 draw at home to Plymouth Argyle.
